ACNE TREATMENT
About 80% of the population will suffer from acne vulgaris (acne) at some
point in their life. The typical approach to acne treatment includes topical
and systemic antibiotics, and topicals such as benzoyl peroxides, salicylic
acid and systemic retinoids. Use of these agents is often difficult and
frustrating. Antibiotic resistance rates of up to 60% have been reported and
are associated with many other side effects. Topical medications may irritate
the skin and require several months for a positive response. Finally, there
have been reports of tertogenic and psychological problems associated with
systemic retinoid therapy.
For this reason, Serenity MedSpa doctors first employ safer effective
methods that are customized to each client. Whether your acne condition is
mild or extreme, our select variety of proven and safe treatments can address
your specific need.
Treatment types that our doctors employ include:
CureLight Blue Light Acne Treatment
CureLight phototherapy is the most effective dual mode spectrally selective
plasma light source. It uses high intensity pure blue violet light combined
with narrow band near infrared light.
This painless, noninvasive, and U.V. free phototherapy destroys the
bacteria that cause acne and reduces inflammation. This effect is usually long
lasting and preventive. It can treat all body areas, including the sensitive
beard area, as well as the back and chest. It treats facial and back acne
three times faster than any other modality.
It requires short twice-weekly visits for 4 weeks that allow you to
continue your daily routine without interruption. Unlike some other systems,
there are no risks of burns, pigmentation changes or unwanted facial hair
removal in male patients. It is among the safest skin treatments available.
As an additional benefit, the near infrared light portion can be added to
rejuvenate the skin at the same time. See skin rejuvenation section for more
information.

SilkPeel Microdermabrasion with Dermalinfusion
Acne is effectively treated with the SilkPeel microdermabrasion with Salicylic
Acid dermalinfusion. See the SilkPeel section for more information.
Levulan Photodynamic Therapy
The Levulan (5-aminolevulinic acid, or ALA) Photodynamic Therapy system is an
advanced 2-step treatment for moderate to severe acne conditions. The first
step is to topically apply ALA, a substance that occurs naturally in the body,
to the treatment area. The ALA is selectively absorbed into fast-growing,
rapidly metabolizing epidermal cells. The second step is to irradiate the
treatment area with blue light for several minutes after about an hour
incubation period.
This combined acne treatment is safe, appears to work faster than laser or
light therapy alone, and requires fewer treatments. In some patients, this
combination may eliminate the need for more intensive systemic therapies.
Skin Care Systems
To augment the above treatments, our physicians also prescribe a tailored skin
care system with carefully selected skin care products to further help
eradicate your acne at home.
